Have you ever wondered why does your clean towels smell bad even after washing them frequently? Could it be that they are not actually clean? Where do you place your towels too after drying yourself from the shower?

Towels are meant to be wet but they are not supposed to stay wet for long. Even if you plan on washing them and throw your wet towel in the laundry hamper or ball on the floor, your towel will still remain wet. Hence, it will create germs and mold to grow causing it to have the musty odors even after wash!

Musty towel odor is similar to having unsanitary mop heads that have not been dried periodically or like having cleaning sponges that you do not dry after many uses. When a towel gets musty or turns sour, it’s a sign that a bacteria colony is breeding and probably growing! The reason behind this is most often from having your damp towel in a humid room. Therefore, it is always important that you hang your towels to allow air to circulate and dry itself to prevent odors.

Learn on the ways you can prevent your towels from getting musty and to keep it fresh even after washing many times!

Ways to remove odor from your towels

Try one or more of these tips to prevent and remove your towels from odors.

Things you will need:

  • Washing machine
  • Clothesline (wire rack for hanging your laundry)
  • Tennis balls (optional)
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Water

Step 1

Wash your towels in a washing machine with vinegar

Vinegar is a natural alternative to a fabric softener. When washing your towels, run them through a regular cycle with a very warm or hot water. Add your regular detergent and a cup of vinegar.

Step 2

Machine wash your towels with Baking soda

Run the towels on regular cycle in your washing machine after you’re done with Step 1, except that this time you use only half cup of baking soda with no detergent or fabric softener. Let the baking soda do the magic.

Step 3

Dry your towels

When you’re done with step 1 and step 2, you will need to line dry your towels immediately. Hang your towels outside and once they are dry, toss them in the dryer machine with one or two new and clean tennis balls. Alternatively, you can also add dryer sheets for a fresher scent.

Why tennis balls?

As weird as it sounds, having new and clean tennis balls in the dryer will help fluff up your towels and make them softer.

Pro Tips💡:

Tip 1

Just like any appliances, your washing machine will also need a good cleaning! If you regularly wash your white clothes with bleach, this is sufficient for cleaning your washing machine.

If not, periodically do a wash cycle your washing machine with 4 cups of vinegar on hot to clean the machine.

Tip 2

Have a bigger household? Assign each person in the house with their own color-coded towels. By knowing who is using which color of the towel, you can figure who is causing this towel infraction. Plus, it’s a good regime too to teach your kids to hang their own towels after every bath or shower!
