Decor Tips: Choosing the Side Table

Choosing the Side Table

When designing a space, the side table is normally overlooked but they make a bigger impact in your space more than you think!

Whether you’re designing for a living room, bedroom, a reading nook or thinking of updating your home with accent pieces, these tips will be great for you ->

Function or Purpose

The purpose of the side table will determine how large the top table/surface needs to be that will help you to choose the right style. Are you looking to style a table lamp on the side table and want to find room for your books and a candle? Or are you simply planning to use a side table as an accent piece next to a lounge chair?

If you need more storage room, opt for double-tiered side table with drawer(s) for added space!

Intentionally mismatched side tables in a traditional space can work really well, but more often than not, if we have two side tables in a room, we like to use different pieces.

Size

When choosing for a side table, it’s important to ensure that the table works with whichever furniture piece you are planning to place next to it.

A typical side table should fall just below the seat’s arm. However, if you are designing a modern space, a slightly taller side table is fine too as it functions just as well. Whichever side table you opt for, check the dimensions before purchasing to ensure that you end up with something that works for your space.

Style

Don’t be afraid to create contrast! Mixing materials and tones, or mixing styles in general, create contrast and side tables are the perfect way to do so. For instance, if we have a solid wood armchair, we can pair a modern side table beside it to give an added layer of dimension. This makes side tables one of the last pieces we choose, as it allows us to consider what we already have and accent a style to balance the whole look of the room.

Variety (How many do you need?)

Sometimes the best interior designs come from experimenting the different looks, from mixing materials to pieces. You can have three side tables even in the living room and it looks fine! Or sometimes, we can use a stool to serve as a side table, giving it a functionality if you live in a more compact space.
